More choirs, please

Drake signees dvsn (pronounced “division”) released their debut album Sept. 5th last week, and it’s getting some worthwhile attention. Their single “Too Deep” merits it by itself, with its maple syrup procession headlined by singer Daniel Daley and a choir. A really good choir.

Compare that to Kanye West’s recent dabble with a choir of his own:

And Chance the Rapper’s magisterial use of his own choir:

It’s entirely possible that adding a gospel choir is the obvious move for any musician wanting to increase a song’s theatrics, but choirs are used so seldom in pop music that I’m not sure whether they’re just a cheap trick or obvious for a reason. There’s only one way to find out: let’s do some more choir stuff. Please.
