Beyonce: 1 + 1

I know this video is a couple months old, but this type of performance has no expiration date. In a year where all of our pop stars are carbon copies of one another’s music with variances only in outward appearance, it’s comforting to know our one remaining diva is at the top of her game.

Make no mistake: Beyonce is in the same league as Cher, Tina Turner, Donna Summers, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey. She started as the promising one in Destiny’s Child, and now she doesn’t have to answer to anyone. She can out sing damn near everybody who’s graced the top 40 in the last decade and has made some music that will last far longer than anything megastars Lady GaGa and Usher have ever done.

This isn’t any new information. I think we’ve been graced by this knowledge ever since she sang the heart into “Listen” on the superb movie “Dreamgirls”. It was a rendition not just for the sake of cinema, but proof that she isn’t just the best looking dancer of the last decade, but the best performer, period.

“1 + 1” is more material to silence the doubters, although by this point I’m sure their voices are close to inaudible. There is no double tracking, no ambiance besides a well played piano, and no hype-man. It’s Beyonce doing what most people haven’t realized what she does best: sing. It also happens to be one of the best songs of the year, and I don’t care if she wrote it or not because her performance brought out emotions I haven’t felt listening to anything released this year.
